Since the outbreak of Covid-19 and recent formula recalls, there have been significant formula shortages throughout our nation. The federal government is working quickly to resolve this formula shortage crisis.
Infants should rely solely on breast milk and/or formula up to at least 12 months of age. If you have any stored breast milk and would like to donate, please contact your local milk bank or Wake Med Mother’s Milk Bank.
Here are some helpful tips:
Do not make your own formula as they are not safe and will not meet your infant’s nutritional needs. Many babies have died from drinking homemade formula made from recipes mothers have seen on social media.
Do not dilute your baby’s formula because your infant may not get the right amount of nutrients and calories his/her body needs
Do not offer toddler formula as they don’t provide the appropriate kind of nutrients for your infant
Please do not to purchase all the formula on the store shelf, and save some for others
Plan ahead by looking for formula before you run out
Check online for store availability before going in to purchase
Try shopping at local small convenience stores and drug stores
Purchase similar formula that is comparable to what you’re currently offering your baby
Talk to your department store manager about when the next truck shipment will arrive
If your child is drinking a specialty formula, please consult with your healthcare provider for recommendations for an alternative formula.
If your baby is drinking a higher calorie formula like Similac Neosure and Enfamil Enfacare, seek instructions from your healthcare provider on how to mix standard formula up to 22 calories per ounce.
